What You Need to Know Before Signing a Rental Car Contract
You need to make sure that you really know what you have agreed to before signing your rental car contract and driving away. This is important so that if something goes wrong while you have the rental car, you will know who would be responsible, how much you are going to be charged when you return it, and what happens if the car gets scratched which you are driving it. These issues need to be spelled out before signing a rental car agreement.
One of the things that rental car owners would make you decide before getting your rental car is whether you want to buy the rental agency’s car insurance policy. A lot of people say no by instinct without even thinking of what that entails. Who then would be responsible if something happens to your rental car while it is with you? You would be responsible if you have no insurance.
This does not mean that you need to buy the rental agency’s insurance policy. Having your own insurance policy can spare you if they have coverage on rental cars. You may have full coverage on rental cars with your current insurance provider.
If you paid your rental car with your credit card, it is good to check with your credit card company for any charges on insurance. Most of them will automatically put rental car insurance on the cars that are rented using their cards.
It is still important to have insurance so you opt to buy the rental car’s insurance if you don’t have any. You also have to keep in mind that you will not only pay for the damages to the rental car if you are in an accident but you also have to pay for the lost time on that car. IF the repair takes three days, then you need to pay additional three days rental since the rental car owner will not make money on that car during those days it is being repaired.
It is not only in an accident that you get a rental car damaged. If the car is scratched, you could be charged. Be sure to inspect the car thoroughly before driving it off the rental car lot. You contract should reflect the damages or the scratches found on the car before your took it out of their garage.
Finally you return your rental car with a certain amount of cost in mind. But you will certainly be surprise if you find additional charges in your final bill. You will have to pay taxes on your rental car.
You also need to pay for gas usage. There are some companies who will charge you with a flat rate for gas but you are required to return the car almost empty. Others will not charge the gas fee if the car is returned full.
